Acne: Reality is Not a Morality Tale

Someone named Red Fury made an interesting comment on my Boing Boing article about acne:


I had acne on/off for years. . . . In my mid-thirties, I tried the Retin-A at night, antibiotic gel for day regimen for about 2 years – no effect. . . . Then, I was talking to a co-worker whose daughter was taking ‘modeling classes’ to become a teen model. She casually mentioned her acned daughter had to give up rice, potato chips, and bread, all of which are high-glycemic index foods. My quack-radar went off, and I looked around for something scientific behind that advice. http://www.ajcn.org/content/86…


Huh. I guess those  nutrition-bashing dermatologists actually did a study and published the scientific results in a peer-reviewed journal. . . . My acne disappeared completely as soon as I eliminated rice and potatoes.


He finds a study that supports the casual advice, he follows the advice, his acne disappears. By convincing him to follow the advice, the scientific study helped him get rid of his acne. Which is impressive.


The interesting twist is that the study was published twice, clearly breaking the rules. Bad scientists! Who did something really good.

Hey guys, Jeroen again here to share a weird update with you about another experience I figured I would share.


My buddy Shawn Heiner, a video game playing guru, has been struggling with acne for quite a long time, and just like me, he was pretty fed up with it.


He was so self-conscious about it  at times that he was afraid to let his girlfriend see him in regular light.

With a hopeless attitude, Shawn had been going to the dermatologist for years to do something about the redness, the blemishes, and those ugly annoying whiteheads.


I couldn’t blame him for his attitude, but I admired him for being proactive about it and actually visiting the dermatologist on a regular basis.


It was more effort than I had made about my personal struggle with acne.



My friend ShawnI knew, like I had, he was truly struggling with acne, but he never really spoke to anyone about it except maybe his dermatologist.


I mean, how was I supposed to help him? I’m not going to come out and say, “hey, you’re acne is really ugly, you need to get real help.”


That would be pretty messed up right?


Well one day, he actually mentioned something about it to me.


I guess it had finally broken him so bad that out of desperation, he felt like he just needed to vent to one of his friends about it.


I assured him I understood what he was going through, and he knew I was genuine because he’d seen me struggle with it myself.


When he began to notice I wasn’t struggling with it anymore, he asked me if I had found some miracle cream or cleansing treatment that had cleared up my acne and left no trace of it.


I actually became pretty excited that I finally had some knowledge and experience to share with him.


We played a lot of PS3 together online, but he was always schooling me in every game I had ever played.


I said, “no cream, cleanser, or medication is going to get rid of your acne… it only temporarily minimizes the symptoms before it makes it worse…”


He replied, “trust me, I know all about that… So how did you do it?”



I showed him some cheesy video online about curing acne permanently that had completely changed my life.


He agreed the video was cheesy, and he was kind of turned off by all of the grammatical errors in the text and of the narrator.


I said, “well, Dr. Mike Walden is pretty bad with grammar, but he is a doctor, and I have to admit, he is an expert on holistically curing acne forever.


He’s helped thousands of people that had the same problem as you and me.


He also suffered from severe acne himself, but now, like me, he has permanently smooth, radiant skin.”


Shawn liked the idea of treating his acne naturally, but he became very excited about getting rid of it all together… forever.


At first he said, “I don’t know if this is really for someone like me.


I’m a really extremely disorganized person, and I’m not sure if I could really stick to any treatment regimen.”


I looked at him,  raised my eyebrows and responded: “Are you kidding me? Do you know who you are talking to?”.


We just laughed and decided to forget about the whole thing and just go back to what we were good at (or at least him) – playing video games.


“I don’t know if this is really for someone like me. I’m a really extremely disorganized person, and I’m not sure if I could really stick to any treatment regimen.”


Apparently, what I had shown him had stuck with him.


Without telling me anything about it, he had gone back to watch the video again and try out the techniques.


To my astonishment, he had cleared up almost all of his acne after only five weeks.


We played video games online together like there was no tomorrow, but we did hang out in person on occasion.


Shawn had just gotten so good about knowing how the light hit his face, which way to turn when he was speaking to someone or when they were looking at him, and how to cover up his acne, that I hadn’t even noticed any improvement.


Then one day, we walked out of the movie theater after seeing a matinee show.


He couldn’t hide his face from the natural sun light, and then I noticed the dramatic improvement in his skin’s texture and smoothness.


I decided to ask him about it, and he said, “…Yeah, I actually have a before-and-after photo on that website now haha!”.


When we laughed together, I could tell how much better he felt inside – not just how much better his skin looked.


“…Yeah, I actually have a before-and-after photo on that website now haha!”


If you found my personal blog about my experience with acne because you are just like us, I just want to say that I admire you for being proactive.


I’m a big fan of people who just go out and do things to change either the world or just their own lives.

    Hello Jeroen, there is indeed a need to take acne prevention treatment and how fortunate you were able to share your knowledge and experience with Shawn – my dermatologist advised to experiment with different methods of acne treatment to find what works best, as everyone is different and what works for some may not work for others. A personal recommendation really helps!

Ladies Who Lift

I’m a woman who has been lifting weights for years and loving it. A few years ago I started a strength blog, inspired by Stumptuous, called gubernatrix.co.uk.


The interactions I had on this blog over the years motivated me to do more to get women lifting heavy — to take action on the ground, so to speak. So I started a beginners’ weight training course in the UK, taught by women, for women.


The course is called Ladies Who Lift and does what it says on the tin: classes take place in the power racks (no plastic studio weights!).


I teach the “big” lifts of squat, deadlift and bench, emphasizing learning how to do this stuff yourself without relying on a trainer to set it all up for you and tell you what to do. The course took around a year to come to fruition, and has been a great success so far.


Are women-only classes necessary?


There was a fair amount of scepticism – even from myself – about whether women-only weight training courses would work. The concept seemed patronising, treating women as a special case, needing special treatment and extra help. Would there even be an audience for them beyond a handful of enthusiasts?


It’s similar to the argument you hear for women in the boardroom or in politics: Unless you’ve got the brass balls to march into that male-dominated environment and survive on your own, you have no business being there.

Well, I don’t buy that any more.


The truth is that men help each other in the gym all the time. Why shouldn’t women?


One of my earliest participants told me “I would never have been brave enough to try barbell lifts without this opportunity”.


Just because she isn’t Miss Super Confident Alpha Female doesn’t mean she won’t enjoy lifting and get plenty out of it, once she has been shown the basics and gained a bit of confidence. She’s already busted quite a few barriers by being interested in barbell lifting in the first place.


The other criticism I have heard is that it’s “less motivating” or “less challenging” to have a women-only class and even that it “holds women back”.


This merely reveals the common prejudice that women don’t work as hard as men, aren’t as good as men, and need to have men around in order to get pumped up and motivated. I haven’t found this to be true and I feel that I lift better when my female lifting buddies are around.


What really turned me around on the idea of women-only classes was running a couple of pilot workshops last year. It was immediately obvious that even just a couple of workshops can make a significant difference to one’s confidence, attitude and approach to weight training.


Why an all-female environment?


I don’t advocate women training in an all-female environment forever, but in order to get started and build confidence, an all-female environment is an excellent solution for many women.


First, it’s a more comfortable learning environment for most women, not having members of the opposite sex around.


You lift with people of a similar size, strength level and body composition. It feels like there’s less to prove and you’re not being singled out for being different.


There’s also less temptation to fall back on the “I’m only a girl” defence, which is common in mixed groups. You are not being given an easier or lighter version of what everyone else is doing.


I have often been in mixed male/female workshops where some women use the presence of the men to hang back and participate less, or are quick to count themselves out of perceived “harder” exercises and leave them to the alpha males to show off.


An all-female environment is the most powerful counterpoint to the traditional male view of weight training. Even if you received exactly the same instruction in a mixed or mostly male group, the impact would not be the same as in a group that was solely women and being taught by a woman.


One of the problems I am told about most often through my blog is the lack of female role models in weight training. It is one of the reasons why Stumptuous has had such an enormous impact on women’s lifting – Krista was the first to get her head around this and publicly, globally provide a solution. I have met many women who started lifting because of this website!


A key message of my Ladies Who Lift course (as with Stumptuous also) is that, not only is weight training not a male preserve, but the knowledge does not have to be handed down by men either.


discussion_600pxWomen are not only capable of lifting weights, they are capable of being experts and teachers in weight training too. This is a really important message: it is not that we as women are being “let in” to a male world, it doesn’t have to be a male world at all!


Being told by a man that “women should train with weights” and “weights won’t make you big and bulky” is one thing. It’s helpful, but sometimes hard to believe. Being told the same thing by a woman who embodies these truths is much more powerful.


Wherever you go on to lift, having these influences early in your lifting career will have a greater impact.


Many of the women who do my Ladies Who Lift beginners’ course go on to join local lifting gyms and train alongside men. They can do this because they have the confidence that they know what they are doing and can hold their own, and they have a sense of what can be achieved by women too.

ellie_deadlift_600pxWomen get told all kinds of crazy stuff by men in gyms who think they know better and think that by undermining what a woman is doing they can somehow appear more manly and authoritative. Stuff like “that weight is too heavy for you”, or “women should do light weights and high reps”.


But if you’ve just come from an environment where your female instructor was encouraging you to lift as heavy as you can, and your female training buddies were smashing heavy squats, it is easier to recognise these comments for the nonsense they are and to have the quiet confidence that what you are doing is ok.


Time and again I am told by participants, “I never thought I’d be able to lift as much as I have!” Expectations of female strength may be low among fitness professionals and society in general, but Ladies Who Lift graduates learn that it is perfectly normal for women to be able to lift weights equivalent to their own bodyweight in various ways and have fun doing it.


But of course, you knew that!

The Best Calories Weight Loss


Dealing with weight loss means to deal with calories intake.

Calories for weight loss per day is minimum number of calories intake per day which is tobe calculated based on your gender and height in accordance with guidelines from an authorized health institute.

When the Body Mass Index aka BMI is 25 or greater, the minimum amount of calories intake is to be reduced by 15% to obtain ideal food amount that  can be maintained for years without adverse effects to the health of most people.

The number of calories intake may need to be increased depending on one’s level of activity, and it may be increased by maximum  15% not to disturb the weight loss goal.

The  loss weight calories value is calculated from the normal maximum Body Mass Index , height, and your activity level. It is associated with 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram for low activity level, 1.1 grams for moderate activity, and 1.4 grams for vigorous activity.

Other components of foods, including essential fatty acids and carbohydrates should be in just enough amount to provide a minimum of calories per day. For men and women with the same height then calories weight loss requirements for women is lower, while protein requirements are the same for men and women.

A low carbohydrate weight loss calorie diet


This means that, in general, women have a richer diet in protein than men. Every diet should always include at least the minimum amount of protein to prevent muscle tissue loss when caloric intake is reduced. A typical high-protein diets will acquire 30% of calories from protein, 30% from fat, and 40% from carbohydrates.

A low carbohydrate weight loss calorie diet generally derives 25% of calories from protein, 65% from fat, and 10% from carbohydrates. The studies show that the minimum protein requirement is within 2000 and 1800 diet calorie.

A bright researchers, have shown that a so called calories and weight loss 1 – 3 system can help women reduce two inches in waist circumference in just four weeks. Some participants even lose five inches from their abdomen. Another study states that the weight loss calorie pill helped women lose weight on average 5.5 pounds in six weeks.
